Cooking Lessons

I was doing nothing at the office and Jojoh invited me to go to her classroom. They were doing cooking lessons for J2F. All the girls prepared wonderful job, they were cutting, they were sharing and they were eating. The most important, they were all prepared. For this kind of lessons, students never forget what to bring. They will be in the classroom on time, but during normal class time, they were all late and they know how to find excuses for it.

After I say bye to them, Kitty, my ex-student gave me breakfast. She gave me sandwiches and other group gave me Mexican roll. I really enjoyed eating their food. Thanks Kitty for giving your lovely, delicious sandwich.

After introducing dishes, descriptions, preparing and opinions, I decided to make them to prepare a dish from these five countries. Here is the lesson.

The lesson:
I divide my 55 students into 10 groups which turned out 5 to 6 people in one group. We have two groups of Japanese food, two of Chinese food, two of Mexican food, two of Italian food, and two of American food.

Each group has to bring ingredients and things to use fro the lesson. They cannot use fire or pan for cooking. They must cooked it at home and bring it to school. All the vegetables have to be washed and cut it. When they come to school, they need to prepare it at school in front of teacher to see.

During their preparation, teacher will walk around the room and see which group have finished preparing their foods. Once that group is ready, the teacher will bring their foods to the teacher's table for display. After preparation, each group has to stop and come up to the front of the classroom and introduce their foods the entire class. They have to tell their ingredients and how they prepared it.

The rule:
Two groups of Chinese food cannot prepare the same dish and other Chinese group. Everyone should have a group, nobody will left out.

My girls can have entire class hour for discussions. I did not think this kind of discussion can take for a long time. I made them to write and to draw their dishes, I gave each group a piece of paper.

During the discussion, they seemed they enjoyed this kind of lesson, they are all excited about it. I just hope they won't forget what they are going to bring. Also, I will prepare one dish for them to eat!

Cooking Lesson, J2I

Today, I combine classes with Christine, my co-worker. Our class was fun but they were too noisy. Parents from new students came to the school and got register for their daughters, maybe they will ask to themselves, what happen to this class.

Even they are making a lot of noise, they could do a great job preparing five different countries' food. We have Japanese, Chinese, American, Mexican and Italian food. All these five countries food are part of our lesson.

After a while, Christine and I really enjoyed it. Students were giving us a lot of food, they prepared with their own efforts. Each group were so different, and unique. After preparation, we made each group to come to the front of the classroom and present their food. The presentation was great and I really enjoyed. Some groups did a great job and some did not even care.

Cooking Lesson, J2C

With my J2C, it is another noisy class. Students over there are more active, they know what they want. They have very good thinking process. They also made wonderful dishes. We also have five country's food. Each group did amazing job in the class. Even our school is not allow us to use fire in the classroom, we could create wonderful by hands.

Cooking Lessons, J2E

J2E is a little bit quiet class, but when their entire class are all together, they are very noisy, too. This class is quiet amazing. I learned from other classes, that they have to present their food before they put into their stomach. With this class, I am more strict, students were hungry and they all really want to eat as soon as possible, They listen very well to each presentation. They applaud very loudly, it seems they enjoyed their classmate's presentation.

After their presentation, when I say they could eat, everyone ate and everyone shared with their classmates. I like the sharing part, it is like little J2E family at school. They treat each other like their own sisters. I really enjoyed that part.

Cooking Lesson, J2D

I really enjoyed to be with J2D. They are politer and well mannered class. Also, they cook or prepared their food very carefully. I really enjoyed the moment and see how they were presenting their foods.

They went to wash hands first, and after that, they were all getting together and started to cook. However, it was hard for me to set this class at the beginning of the class hour. After setting them down, I gave my policies and they listen well, they did not started to eat at the beginning.

After preparing their food, I asked each group to do their presentations. Each of them did a great job, even I had to listen for 10 different groups' presentation. Each group is very unique. Also, the way that each group prepared is also unique, too. I really enjoyed to be with them.

Cooking Lesson, J2J

J2J class is very rude when they treat their teachers, but working in groups this class is stronger. I don't really like to teach this group because they were all unrespectful to me at the begining of the school year, I went to talk to their homeroom teacher, and since then, they did not like me.

Also, this class did a great job preparing food. It seems all the classes did a great job preparing food for themselves and their friends. In terms of Italian food, all the groups from all the classes prepared spaguetti. This dish is quiet commom between classes.

It was easy to control them while they were preparing their food. I like to see them working in groups and collaborate with each other. After that, they did a presentation. One students from my TA's group did a great job presenting their food. She spoke wonderful English with clear pronounciation. Other groups did not even care about this activity.

At the Beginning, Anastasia

Tomorrow is Saturday, we have classes here in Taiwan. We are making up the class for Friday last week which was National Holiday (Sweeping Day) in Taiwan. Since Saturday class, nobody will pay attention to me, I decided to teach them a song. This week, in our book mentioned Anastasia, the Disney movie. I am going to teach them a song from this movie. Also, they can see video clips of it. When I mentioned Anastasia to them, they did not know what I am talking about. So, I think this is a great opportunity for them to see and learn more English.

At the Beginning Lyrics:
We were strangers
Starting out on a journey
Never dreaming
What we'd have to go through
Now here we are
And I'm suddenly standing
At the beginning with you

No one told me
I was going to find you
Unexpected
What you did to my heart
When I lost hope
You were there to remind me
This is the start

Life is a road
AndI want to keep going
Love is a riverI wanna keep flowing
Life is a roadNow and forever
Wonderful journeyI'll be there
When the world stops turning

I'll be there
When the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you

We were strangers
On a crazy adventure
Never dreaming
How our dreams would come true
Now here we stand
Unafraid of the future
At the beginning with you
Life is a road
And I want to keep going
Love is a riverI wanna keep flowing

Life is a road
Now and forever
Wonderful journey
I'll be there
When the world stops turning

I'll be there
When the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you

I knew there was somebody somewhere
Like me alone in the dark
Now I know my dream will live on
I've been waiting so long
Nothing's gonna tear us apart

Life is a road
And I want to keep going
Love is a riverI wanna keep flowing
Life is a roadNow and forever
Wonderful journey
I'll be there
When the world stops turning
I'll be there
When the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you

Life is a road and I wanna keep going
Love is a river I wanna keep going on....Starting out on a journey
Life is a road and I wanna going
Love is river I wanna keep flowing
In the end I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you.

What is Easter?

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

Christians believe according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion, is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in Him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.
In Western Christianity, Easter marks the ending of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.

Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

Because of Easter's pagan origins, and also because of the commercialization of Easter, many Christian churches have begun to refer to it as Resurrection Day.

The biblical account of Jesus' death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30. Easter is always celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

Easter Celebration 2007 at Sheng-Kung

Today, God's Sheep came to our school, Sheng- Kung. The God's Sheep which is called (羔羊) in Chinese has a good meaning behind it. This group is compound of 4 people. One handsome man and three beautiful ladies. The man is the priest of the church with his wife and two sisters created this group. All of them are very good at singing Christians songs.

The priest is amazing because he is not who create songs but also he plays the piano and sings at the same time. Most of his songs are ROCK、DISCO、CHACHA、RUMBA, all of the songs are so great, it can be fit for all ages. I really like this group and I really enjoyed their performance today.
One of the songs:

Meaning of the song

If you have an opportunity, you can hire this group and play at your school. They are great, I like them and their songs a lot!

I found this song on the Internet. This was the open ceremony song that this group came to my school today. I really like this song.

(Life is Wonderful)

 Open my eyes,
 Light up my way, 讓我看得更深走得更遠
 Stand by my side,
 Praise my Lord,

Meaning

◎Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday to you, oh my dear baby
Happy birthday to you, oh my dear baby

The Priest of the group God's Sheep also create this lovely song, which I really like it.

Meaning of the song

Tomb Sweeping Day

This Wendnesday is our country's Tomb Sweeping Day. This year, we have four days of vacation. I am so excited and I cannot wait to realx and spend time with my son.

In the following is the story of Tomb Sweeping Day in Taiwan:

The Chinese respect for filial piety and careful attention to funeral rites is visibly manifested in the custom of ancestor worship. Since ancient times, a day has been designated for sweeping the tomb and honoring one's ancestors. Though different in each family, these rites are usually performed on the first few days prior to or following Ching Ming, one of the traditional solar divisions falling in early April, when the frost retreats and spring returns bringing renewal to all living things. In 1935, the government of the ROC designated Ching Ming as Tomb Sweeping Day to further heighten the significance of this occasion.

After Taiwan transformed from an agrarian- to industrial-based economy, many of the older customs were gradually neglected. Tomb Sweeping Day, however, has retained its deep meaning in modern Chinese society, as the numerous families carrying out cleaning and worship rites at cemeteries during this time will testify. The Central Government Prayer Service is also held on this day, amply evidencing the deep respect with which the Chinese view their roots.

Since most cemeteries are located on hillsides in the countryside or outskirts of town, upon completing the Tomb Sweeping Day rites, many families will take advantage of the fine spring weather by going on a family outing. These trips have become an important part of Tomb Sweeping Day as a time for families to enjoy time together.

The foods offered on Tomb Sweeping Day vary by region. In Taiwan, the most common dishes are the distinctive " grave cakes" and jun ping.

Tomb Sweeping Day combines the people's reverence for their ancestors and for nature and is a reaffirmation of the Chinese ethic of filial piety. Today, Tomb Sweeping Day is a time not only for worship and maintaining the tombs of ancestors, but also a tangible expression of filial respect for the teachings and virtues of forebears.

Avril Lavigne, "Don't Tell Me"

This is a very short week for us here in Taiwan because Tomb Sweeping Day. I want to do something fun and relaxing for my 8th graders. I decided to teach easy song of Avril. My girls like her a lot. I am hopping that my power point will work well.

Teaching English songs here in Taiwan where is not an English speaking country will work very well. Students will like and at the same time, they can learn English by singing.

Lyrics in the following:

"Don't Tell Me"

You held my hand and walked me home, I know
Why you gave me that kiss it was something like this it made me go ooh ohh
You wiped my tears, got rid of all my fears, why did you have to go?
Guess it wasn't enough to take up some of my love
Guys are so hard to trust
Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl?
The one who gives it all away, yeah

[Chorus:]
Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you, this time?
Did you think that it was something I was gonna do and cry?
Don't try to tell me what to do,
Don't try to tell me what to say,
You're better off that way

Don't think that your charm and the fact that your arm is now around my neck
Will get you in my pants I'll have to kick your ass and make you never forget
I'm gonna ask you to stop, thought I liked you a lot, but I'm really upset
Get out of my head get off of my bed yeah that's what I said
Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl, the one who, throws it all away

[Chorus]

This guilt trip that you put me on won't, mess me up I've done no wrong
Any thoughts of you and me have gone away

[Chorus]

Better off that way
I'm better off alone anyway

Who is really nice ?

This short composition was written by 江 侑蓁 in J1H.

Who is Really Nice?

I know Katty is a really nice. She is very kind to everybody. She always smiles at everyone. If you made her angry, then she will smile at you. She is very earnest. For example: Sometimes the teacher will say “who wants to clean the bathroom? ’’Then she will say “I want to clean the bathroom.” or if she saw somebody have a problem then, she will help them to solve the problem.

She often likes to talk to people. If you talk to her then, you will be happy for all day. And she often made everybody laugh. She will sing strange song or do strange dance. She is very funny. Sometimes she will solve two people’s money argument. She has another name is flatfish. It’s about her real name Katty Lee’s story. And her hobbies are: playing piano, playing computer, and watching TV.

Her favorite doll is snoopy. If she saw snoopy, she will buy it and will love it very much. Her capacity for eating lunch is too big. She always use big bowl to fill rice, vegetable, meat and soup. But she is not fat, she is very thin. I don’t know why she eats a lot of food, but doesn’t be fat. I guess maybe she exercises every day or she eats a little food at night.

She is easy to get along with everybody because she is very friendly. She has a lot of friends. She is a good friend. Maybe you can make friend with her then, you will find a lot of secrets from her. That’s why I think Katty is a really nice person.
